Current Medical / Allied Health Students

Let’s face it – studying is tough. From having to remember what the side effects of halothane are to understanding what courses through the clavipectoral triangle, it’s hard to appreciate the fun side to medical school.

Hospital Attachments

The Singapore Medical Society of Victoria can help alleviate your stress with some medically related yet fun activities you can be part of! During the various university holidays, SMSV will be holding hospital tours co-organised with the National Healthcare Group. You’ll get to experience first hand the workings of local Singaporean Hospitals. What’s more, these tours are conducted by the Associate Dean of the hospitals so rest assured you’ll be in good hands!

Details of this programme will be announced here at http://www.smsv.sg, as well as on facebook. Any questions should be addressed to Ma Jun at ma.jun@smsv.sg, or info@smsv.sg. You can also post in our forums at http://forums.smsv.sg/

Medical Mission Trips

Medical training is more than just mugging – we realise that there are skills in medicine that needs to be picked up outside school hours. We are trying to cater to that need by organising mission trips to various countries which will be held in the December/ January period. These non-religious trips will be aimed at helping the less fortunate part of the world as well as providing you with a platform to refine those clinical skills you learnt at medical school!

Currently, we have initiated two programmes.

The first is a two week long trip to Vellore, Chennai in India, held in collaboration with the Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre (SNHRC). Participants will get a chance to learn more from ward rounds, clinics, assisting surgeons in the operating theatres. There will be an opportunity to go to the rural health camp, that is held once every two weeks, where students will see more chronic conditions and also interact with the local villagers. Approximately 10 spaces are available each year.

The second mission trip is to the Border of Thailand/Myanmar, Mae Sot, located at the western tip of Thailand joining Myanmar. The objectives of this trip are to provide relieve to acute wounds of migrant children and teach first aid skills to teachers. 4 spaces will be available.

Questions about these programmes should be directed to Jasmin at jasmin.tan@smsv.sg

Social Events

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We appreciate that – that’s why we organise after-exam parties. We work hard and play hard. Of course besides after-parties, there will be scatters of networking sessions held throughout the year where you will get to mingle with other medical students from other universities as well as doctors!

Details of upcoming social events will be announced here at http://www.smsv.sg, as well as on facebook. For more information, email info@smsv.sg

Career Guidance

If you’ll be graduating soon and are looking for a job, SMSV can help you along through the information sessions we hold yearly with the National Healthcare Group as well as Singapore Healthcare. Representatives from these groups will be coming down to Victoria to furnish you with information about working in Singaporean hospitals. You’ll be able to make an informed decision and plan your career!

Details of upcoming sessions will be announced here at http://www.smsv.sg, as well as on facebook. For more information, email info@smsv.sg
