The Singapore Medical Society of Victoria (SMSV), in collaboration with the National Skin Centre, organised a series of hospital attachments to be held over the summer vacation from the 24 November 2008 to 16 January 2009. Selected members of SMSV spent 2 full weeks attached to various departments of NSC, including the Communicable Disease Centre (CDC) and the Department of STI Control (DSC) of Singapore.
During the attachments, medical students were exposed to the workings of the hospitals with sit-ins in consultation rooms and the treatment rooms. They also visited wards in the CDC and saw procedures such as biopsy being done. Few lucky ones were even allowed to assist and or perform some minor procedures!

The first day of the NHG hospital tour started in Tan Tock Seng Hospital Singapore. Participants were informed a few days through email to meet up near the Kopitiam by 8.30am. There they met up with the NHG representative who brought them to a conference room for a briefing. Prof Tham Kum Ying, the Associate Dean of Tan Tock Seng Hospital gave them a presentation on the history and also the day-to-day running of the hospital. Following that, students were split into groups and were brought around the hospital; they observed the wards, clinics and other hospital facilities. At the end of the tour, students had lunch which was provided for by NHG before we concluded the first day.
The second day began in the National Skin Centre (NSC) in the morning followed by the afternoon session in the National University Hospital (NUH). In NSC, or 2 medical students were each attached to a specialist, where they spent the day observing the protocols and procedures of a dermatological consultation. At the conclusion of the NSC tour, students travelled to NUH and had an hour break before the start of the NUH tour. Subsequently, students gathered in the Kent Ridge Wing and had a presentation of the NUH system by Dr. Goh Khean Teik. After the presentation, they were separated into groups and were brought around the different departments ranging obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pediatrics and also the emergency. After each group has rotated through the departments, they were gathered again for a debrief before the day concluded.
