About the speaker
Mr Peter Hwang graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He pursued training first in general surgery, and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1993, and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1993.
He trained in neurosurgery in Singapore, Sidney and Adelaide, and obtained the fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 1998.
He was appointed as consultant neurosurgeon at the National Neuroscience Institute in Singapore, and served as a consultant neurosurgeon to the Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National University Hospital and Changi General Hospital in Singapore. He was appointed Clinical Director of Neurosurgery at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne in 2006.
Content of Talk
Mr Hwang has a wealth of knowledge and experience working and training in both Australia and Singapore. He will be talking on life after medical school and will include the following topics:
1. Specialization
2. Where to work
3. Marriage and kids
4. Work outside of medicine
The talk will end with a Q&A session.

SMSV recently had a freshies gathering at Casa Esperanza thanks to Yin Fei who had kindly offered her place for the event.

We will like to extend a warm welcome to the new Year 1s who have joined us as medical students in Australia, and thank the medical students from the different year levels who have come down for making this a successful event.

For those who have not signed up for your SMSV membership, please be informed that there will be another membership recruitment drive at the Freshies Gathering in Melbourne.

About the Pre-Employment Grant (PEG)
The PEG has been designed as a financial incentive to attract more Singaporean students studying medicine overseas to return to Singapore.
The grant will be offered mid-course and cover up to 60% of the remaining years of tuition fees, capped at $40,000 per year up to a maximum grant of $80,000. Singaporean students studying in an overseas medical school recognised by the Singapore Medical Council will be eligible to apply. The selection will be based on merit. Students should possess good grades in their medical studies, especially in their clinical training years. Students are also required to undergo an oral interview with Senior Clinicians from the restructured hospitals and MOH Holdings.
Recipients of the grant will be required to serve in the hospital clusters for a minimum period. Students receiving a one-year grant will serve in the hospital clusters for three years, while those receiving a two-year grant will serve for four years. The service period will include the one-year housemanship which is served locally.

SMSV will be holding a predeparture gathering for all undergraduate and postgraduate medical students starting their medical course in Monash University and University of Melbourne.

Participants will be able to:
1. Meet fellow coursemates and obtain advice from current medical students studying in Australia,
2. Learn how SMSV can help them in their study in Australia,
3. Sign up for SMSV membership,
4. Obtain a copy of Survival Guide to Studying Medicine in Australia prepared by SMSV.
Participants are encouraged to RSVP by 13th January to yiliang.zheng@smsv.sg so that adequate copies of the survival guide will be prepared.
