Residency Program and Pre Employment Grant Information Seminar

As part of the Carers@Singapore 2011 series, this session is tailored for final and penultimate year Singaporean medical students studying in Australian universities in 2011. Issues covered in detail would include the residency program and pre-employment grant, and how they affect med students in Australian universities. There will be ample opportunity for questions. Refreshments would be provided.

Date: 7th January, 2011 (Friday)
Time: 3:00pm to 5:30pm
Location: College of Medicine Building, 16 College Road, Singapore 169854

The event is open to all Australia based medical students. However, as there is limited seating, priority would be given to final year students, penultimate year students and graduating students. RSVPs are now closed
Pre Employment Grant – further information
The Pre-employment Grant application for Australia and New Zealand is open from now till 30 Jan 2011. The PEG website has all the details and access to the application portal is via the site as well : http://www.physician.mohh.com.sg/peg

Summer Attachments in Singapore 2010-2011

As summer holidays are approaching, once again SMSV is bringing summer attachments in Singaporean hospitals to you. This time in the December to January holidays, we are offering attachments at TTSH and NSC. Details are as follows:

for NSC:
attachment is from 17-28 Jan (period of 2 weeks) involving attachment to clinics, nursing stations, laboratories, CDC wards as well as to the Department of STI Control (DSC) clinics.

for TTSH:
the hospital is offering attachments to students in 7 departments: General Surgery, General Medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Trauma Surgery and infectious diseases, out of which Gen Med and Trauma Surg are not offered to pre-clinical students.

Other things to take note:
Please apply by 8th of November to allow time for the hospital to make allocations.
Also applying for an attachment implies commitment towards attending the attachment if you are successful.
SMSV members will be given priority if there is a shortage of spaces.
Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be informed by email in late November or early December. Additional information needed for successful application would be sent out at that time.

Med Students’ Forum: Brain, Mind and Consciousness – Memoirs of a Singaporean Neurosurgeon

About the speaker

Mr Peter Hwang graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He pursued training first in general surgery, and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1993, and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1993.

He trained in neurosurgery in Singapore, Sidney and Adelaide, and obtained the fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 1998.

He was appointed as consultant neurosurgeon at the National Neuroscience Institute in Singapore, and served as a consultant neurosurgeon to the Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National University Hospital and Changi General Hospital in Singapore. He was appointed Clinical Director of Neurosurgery at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne in 2006.

Content of Talk

Mr Hwang has a wealth of knowledge and experience working and training in both Australia and Singapore. He will be sharing his experiences focusing not just on his professional journey, but also on the non-medical aspects of life as a doctor (eg finding the balance between work, family and life), and the differences in life as a doctor in Australia and Singapore.

There will be opportunity for dialogue at the end of the session.

Medical Attachment in Vellore, India

SMSV-SNHRC Student Attachment

Location: Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centrev (SNHRC), Vellore, India
Date: Friday 03/12/10 – Sunday 12/12/10
Time: Arrive early morning; Depart late evening/night
Accomodation & Food: Ashram next to the hospital (twin rooms); $25/night approx. (meals incl.)
Transport: SNHRC will provide a bus to and fro the airport; incl. transport to the rura/semirural areas
Activities:
1. Orientation (Friday 03/12/10)

  • Social worker provided by the hospital to help understand the working environment of the hospital

2. Health Camps in rural/semirural areas: Sat 4/12/10 & Sun 12/12/10
Objectives:

  • To understand the needs of the community of Vellore, India
  • To understand the practice of medicine in rural/semirural areas
  • Collect empirical data for possible further research (e.g. BP, BSL, etc)
  • To aid the students in clinical practice

3. Hospital rotations
Objectives:

  • Hands-on clinical experience
  • To understand more about the practice of the respective rotations
  • To understand the medical practice in Vellore (India)
  • Students are expected to be on night-calls(supervised) if required

Estimated cost: $375
Accomodation & Food- $225 approx. ($25 x 9 nights)
Flight ticket- $150 approx.

Update on the pre-employment grant

Most of us would have heard of the pre-employment grant offered by the Singapore Health Clusters to attract foreign graduated Singaporean doctors back to Singapore to work. Here’s a summary of the latest updates:

  • Offered to Singaporeans with good grades (ie there will be a selection and interview process)
  • Capped at 40,000 per year (max of 80,000 in 2 years), or 60% of remaining tuition fees
  • Three year bond for those taking one year grant
  • Four year bond for those taking two year grant
  • Applications for UK students open 16th August
  • Applications for Aussie students likely to be end January

Career Symposium 2010

Career Symposium 2010 is co-organized by the Academic Directorate of the 61st NUS Medical Society and the 3 sponsoring institutes(NUHS, NHG, SingHealth) for the new residency program in Singapore. The aim of the symposium is to provide an avenue for the institutes to introduce the various residency programs available and to help Singaporean medical students, both locally and overseas, make better informed decisions regarding post-graduation. Some of the highlights of the symposium are:

- Booths for the various specialties with residents and program directors present to answer any queries
- Information packs will be given out with an extensive guide and write-up to the programs offered
- Talks given by program directors and residents to introduce the various programs and share their experiences
